What Is Exploding Head Syndrome? Are You Crazy?

Do you hear noises in your head? Sound can actually be deceiving sometimes as we learn about Exploding Head Syndrome.

This is a fairly common sleep disorder that usually sound like a fatal episode of death by loud noise. It can affect anyone from time to time and sufferers usually experience the sensation during sleep. They reportedly see a flash or feel a single thump on their head that will startle them awake.

Those who are afflicted with this disorder will hear a very loud, abrupt sound that seems like it's originating from the inside when they are asleep. Some people have likened the loud sounds to shotgun blast, cymbals clanging and even bombs exploding.

Generally, other than the sudden rush of adrenaline which causes momentary shortness of breath or heavy breathing, the syndrome is not accompanied with pain or any other outward symptom. In some sufferers, the episodes may include restless leg, sleep twitches or the sensation of falling.

While the Exploding Head Syndrome is usually harmless, those who experience it may feel distressed about being the 'one that hears sound', fearful of being stigmatised, think that they're crazy or mistaken it for paranormal activity. A person with EHS just hears noises in the head but they are not abnormal.

The exact cause of EHS is unknown but the most common denominator between sufferers is stress. And the professional's recommendation is for sufferers to practise relaxation techniques to reduce episodes of EHS.

You can try relaxing the body and mind before bedtime through reading, listening to soothing music, soaking in warm water, or do a yoga routine. Of course, you'd need to be able to separate work and daily stress from sleep; be sure to get at least a minimum of six hours of rest each day.
