How To Treat Frizz Hair

Got issues with your unruly hair? Here's how to make peace with it once and for all.

Q: I've been treating my frizzy wavy hair but it still looks dry and damaged. How can I make my hair more manageable?

A: If you have naturally curly hair, you've probably had to deal with bouts of frizziness at some point. Curly hair is very delicate by nature.
"When it becomes dry and damaged, the curls frizz out and eventually develop split ends," says hair stylist and trainer at Eco Hair and Beauty Academy, Samantha Lim. "Frizziness tends to arise after your hair has been permed, colored, or bleached. "It not only looks unkempt, it also makes the person look much older."

Heed the following tips to control the frizz:

1. Use a deep conditioning treatment once a week to soothe and soften your hair. However, avoid oil-based conditioners, as these can contribute to frizziness. Be sure to choose a cream-based conditioner instead.

2. Heat helps conditioner penetrate deep into the hair. Try sitting under a warm hood dryer, or wrapping a towel around your hair while leaving in your conditioner to work for at least an hour or even better, overnight.

3. Choose a hair product that's made specifically for the thickness of your hair. A deep conditioning treatment may tame your frizz, but it will also make fine hair flat. Such treatments would be more suited to thicker hair.

3. Work with the texture of your hair. Constantly straightening or perming will result in a great deal of damage to your locks. By working with the innate qualities of your hair, you'll find it much easier to manage.

4. Make sure you get your hair colored or permed at a reputable hair salon. During your appointment, find out how the products that are to be used on your hair work, and how their long-term use will affect your locks.

5. Your hair should be blow-dried methodically. Randomly running the dryer up and down your hair can cause your hair cuticles to split, resulting in more frizz. Divide your hair into sections and blow-dry it section-by-section.

6. Avoid using a hairbrush to straighten-out tangles. Instead, use a wide-toothed comb to de-tangle without creating static and frizz.

7. Smoothening serums that contain silicone work best to remove frizz. They contain proteins, which give hair strength and protect it from the effects of humidity.
