‘How I Met Your Mother’ bows out with record ratings

Aired on Monday, March 31, the conclusion of the long-running CBS comedy "How I Met Your Mother" drew more viewers than any other episode. A record 13.3 million Americans tuned in to say goodbye to Ted, Robin, Barney, Marshall and Lily.

For the first time in its nine-year history, "How I Met Your Mother" crossed the threshold of 13 million viewers. Titled "Last Forever," the hour-long final episode drew four million more viewers than the previous episode, "The End of the Aisle," which aired Monday, March 24.

The finale broke the record held for nearly nine years by "The Pineapple Incident," the tenth episode of the show's first season. Aired on November 28, 2005, the episode attracted 12.3 million viewers. On a side note, the mystery introduced in "The Pineapple Incident" was not explained in the finale, much to the chagrin of some fans.

While the final hour of "HIMYM" was a huge success in terms of ratings, the episode left many of the show's diehard fans disappointed and even outraged. Several viewers were quick to share their reactions on Twitter, with some going as far as calling the show "a nine-year scam." – AFP/Relaxnews, April 3, 2014.
